My Experience with Carolina Parenting Solutions
By: Ashley Schlieper
As a graduate student, you hope and pray for an internship that will not only provide the tools and prepare you for a future career, but one that will also make you want to be a better clinician. I came to Carrie interested in working with young children, but had very little insight into what Carolina Parenting Solutions offered children and their families. After a period of trainings, I was able to go out into the community and work with the kids on my own. This allowed me to see first hand the reasons for the commitment and passion Carrie and other Therapists had for the work they are doing
Every day I learn something new about myself both as a clinician and as a person. My eyes have been opened to many populations in need that I would never have dreamed I would be interested in working with. The experiences I have had so far have motivated me to work in the field of Infant Mental Health after I receive my Masters. It is very empowering to play a part in showing a new mother how to bond with her baby or help a young child with Autism increase his social and language skills through play. This work allows you to remember how it was to be a child, and gives you the opportunity to get on the floor with kids and be silly in a way that will promote their developmental health (and your emotional health).
Kids see and learn about the world by playing a interacting with others, and it is moving to see a child slowly recover from trauma because of the play and work we have done together. Some days can be challenging, but I believe that social workers are able to handle the difficult situations this job can throw at us because we genuinely appreciate the process, the progress and many times the personal growth we see in our clients as a result of their hard work and our support. Sometimes we grow the most during hard times and this Internship proves it.
Please join us in welcoming our new Carolina Parenting Solutions babies!!!
