“Parents are often so busy with the physical rearing of children that they miss the glory of parenthood, just as the grandeur of the trees is lost when raking leaves.”
Marcelene Cox
I am excited to begin working with you to help you regain the pleasure in your parenting, to enjoy your children and to enhance this bond in a gentle team approach that will allow your children to thrive and make day to day life more enjoyable. While every family is unique and has their own challenges I know that it is easy for all families to get off track, become overwhelmed and get into negative patterns.
I began my professional career as an undergraduate at Ithaca College, following graduation I briefly taught Nursery School before continuing on for my Master’s in Social Work at Columbia University in 1993. I worked at North Shore Child and Family Guidance center as an intern and was hired to work as a family specialist teaching parenting skills in a therapeutic foster care program. It was here that I learned to use behavior modification with positive interactions and play therapy to aid these children and families in being reunited. I also worked for the Diocese of Brooklyn as a school social worker and finally as a family therapist. When we relocated to Connecticut I worked in a specialize school setting for at risk youth and finally for the Milford, CT Board of Education, as an elementary school counselor. My family moved to Charlotte 5 years ago and I have been with Carolina Parenting solutions since March of 2009. I love being an Infant Mental Health Therapist as it incorporates my earlier years of teaching Nursery School with my (forever evolving) expertise in parenting skills and love of play therapy all in a home based model. I offer over 20 years experience working with children and their families, in various clinical and school settings and I have a strong belief in building on the strengths that the client already possess to gain more positive skills. I feel it is important to “catch the children being good” so that they can develop a better sense of self and learn to better control their impulses and have better success in school and in their home which makes for a more enjoyable home life for all.
I have been married for over 15 years, and have two children 13 and 10. I am involved in the community, as a volunteer in my children’s schools and their extracurricular activities. I know that much of my learning has come from being a parent; juggling their needs and work while also finding time for myself and this “balance” has taught me to be a better therapist and person. I hope that my years of experience as both a social worker and a mother, will aid me in being a helpful resource to you and assist you in getting things back on track as well as giving me the opportunity to learn from you as you welcome me into your home.
