My name is Leah Barnes, and I am a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor in North Carolina and a Licensed Professional Counselor in South Carolina. I grew up in Florida and earned my B.S. in psychology from the University of Florida. From there, I went on to earn my M.A. in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Central Florida in Orlando with a graduate certificate in Play Therapy. My internship while in school was working for an agency that provided in-home mental health counseling to children and I loved it! Since graduating, I have worked in a variety of settings including in-home, school-based, and outpatient. While there are certainly benefits to different settings, I have found that being able to work with children and families where they are, in their natural setting allows me to help them achieve success quickly.

I have experience with a variety of concerns, including oppositional behaviors, depression, anxiety, parenting concerns, and trauma. I spent four years working with children in foster care, and another two working exclusively with sexual abuse victims. I use many different techniques in therapy, including art, play therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and behavior modification, depending on what works best for your family. I truly believe that parents are an integral part of the counseling process, as you know your child far better than I ever will. I love being able to work closely with parents to help them facilitate change in their family and strengthen their confidence in their parenting abilities.

My family and I moved to North Carolina in 2013 and have loved it! The winters have been much colder than Florida, but I enjoy the different seasons. I love running, and there’s a good chance you may see me running around town. I have been married since 2007 and have two late elementary-aged children and two dogs. I look forward to working with you and your family!
